Mikkel Dal Hende is an adventurer with a curiosity and a passion for people and places. He has backpacked around Asia, South and North America, hiked in the Himalayas, Andes, Scandinavia and the Alps. Mikkel toured Vietnam on a motorcycle and around Sri Lanka in a tuk-tuk. He cycled from Denmark to Cape Town, and is the most comfortable on a bicycle. His current adventure involves cycling from Los Angeles to Panama. As an outdoor instructor and enthusiast, he teaches skills in kayaking, climbing, hiking, skiing, mountain-biking and more. He is passionate about kite-surfing and surfing. He was in he army for 5 years but with age has turned more into a hippie. Bringing people together, unity and connections are his inspirations. He wishes to invite people to try new things and expand their minds, seeing new places and meet new people.
The topic:
In the middle of a worldwide pandemic, Mikkel and his friend set off on bicycles from Copenhagen with the aim of reaching Bangladesh. Due to closed borders, they had to change plans, so they headed South instead and 10 months later, found themselves in Cape Town, South Africa, after cycling through Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia. Being surrounded by elephants, giraffes, hippos and zebras on a bicycle is quite magical and life back home in Denmark doesn’t get much further from life in Africa. Even though you see curiosity, lively eyes and big smiles, Africa still has a dark cloud above it and being faced with extreme poverty is inevitable.
