Why was it decided to close the Danish embassy in Buenos Aires two years after the Danish Queen, Crown Prince and +20 companies visited the country?
Two political science students will answer the question in a presentation based on a a political science BA project converted into a research article.
Additionally, the Argentine ambassador in Denmark will share his perspectives and an introduction to the topic will be given by journalist Ebbe Fischer.
The presentation will last about an hour. Then there will be a break followed by about 45 minutes of questions and discussion.
The presentation will be in English. There will, however, be an opportunity to ask questions in Danish and Spanish.
Background:
In 2019, Denmark saw great potential in Argentina and the government chose to carry out an official state visit with the Queen, the Crown Prince and many of the largest Danish companies in the entourage. In 2020, the Danish Embassy in Buenos Aires and Danish Industry planned another visit to strengthen cooperation, but this was prevented by the Covid-19 pandemic.

In 2021, the Danish government suddenly announced that it would close the embassy. It was on 31 July 2022, despite the fact that all the other Nordic countries Sweden, Norway and Finland still have fully operational embassies in Buenos Aires. This foreign policy U-turn has caused astonishment in Denmark, Argentina as well as in the rest of the Nordic region.

Based on 30 interviews in Denmark and Argentina as well as a document analysis, the lecturers will analyze the course of events and talk about the decision-making processes that led to the closing of the Danish embassy in Buenos Aires – a very unusual decision in a Nordic context.

¿Por qué se decidió cerrar la embajada danesa en Buenos Aires dos años después de que la Reina de Dinamarca, el Príncipe Heredero y +20 empresas visitaron el país?

Dos estudiantes de ciencias políticas responderán la pregunta en una presentación basada en un proyecto de licenciatura en ciencias políticas convertido en un artículo de investigación.

Además, el embajador argentino en Dinamarca compartirá sus perspectivas y el periodista Ebbe Fischer brindará una introducción al tema.

La presentación tendrá una duración aproximada de una hora. Luego habrá una pausa seguido por unos 45 minutos de preguntas y debate.

La presentación será en inglés. Sin embargo, habrá una oportunidad de hacer preguntas en danés y español.

Hvorfor blev det besluttet at lukke den danske ambassade i Buenos Aires to år efter Dronningen, Kronprinsen og +20 virksomheder besøgte landet?

To statskundskabsstuderende vil besvare spørgsmålet i et oplæg med udgangspunkt i et BA-projekt omdannet til en forskningsartikel.

Derudover vil den argentinske ambassadør i Danmark dele sine perspektiver og en introduktion til emnet vil blive givet af journalist Ebbe Fischer.

Præsentationen varer cirka en time. Derefter vil der være en pause efterfulgt af cirka 45 minutters spørgsmål og diskussion.

Præsentationen vil være på engelsk. Der vil dog være mulighed for at stille spørgsmål på dansk og spansk.

Baggrund:
I 2019 så Danmark et stort potentiale i Argentina og regeringen valgte at afvikle et officielt statsbesøg med Dronningen, Kronprinsen og mange af de største danske virksomheder i følget. I 2020 planlagde Danmarks ambassade i Buenos Aires og Dansk Industri endnu et besøg for at styrke samarbejdet, men det blev forhindret af Covid-19-pandemien.

I 2021 udmeldte den danske regering pludselig, at man ville lukke ambassaden. Det blev den d. 31. juli 2022, til trods for at alle de øvrige nordiske lande Sverige, Norge og Finland fortsat har ambassader fuldt kørende i Buenos Aires. Denne udenrigspolitiske U-vending har skabt undren i såvel Danmark, Argentina som i det øvrige Norden.

Med udgangspunkt i 30 interviews i Danmark og Argentina samt en dokumentanalyse vil foredragsholderne analysere hændelsesforløbet og fortælle omkring de beslutningsprocesser, der medførte til lukningen af den danske ambassade i Buenos Aires – en i nordisk regi meget usædvanlige beslutning.
