The troubled Sahel – Libya, Sudan, South Sudan, Burkina Faso and CAR – Lucy Hsu & Mette Ehlers
The Wagner brigade was also shopping at the small small market with clay stalls in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic 🇨🇫 when Lucy and Mette visited.
CAR was then and now haunted by Russian mercenaries and Islamic guerillaes supported by Chad and Qatar. The police were often in civilian and were not content with us when we photographed them.
Sudan 🇸🇩 is having a sad destiny now too. When we visited the challenges included Mette’s shoes melting on the way to the Meroe Pyramids – a unesco site. How many pyramids are there in Sudan 🇸🇩 vs Egypt 🇪🇬?
South Sudan 🇸🇸 is an amazing country to travel when it’s just relatively safe. Get inspired to visit the Mundari cattle nomad tribe. Will you take the challenge to wash you hair in cows urine to have blonde hair as the men do here ? (Spoiler: Mette did as the first foreign visitor)
Would you wrestle with the men ? Would you cover in the ashes from the fires 🔥 when they burn on cow dung ? (Spoiler: we did)
The tribe is actually wonderful to visit take away is the local fixer and how to stay in tent with them)
Burkina Faso 🇧🇫 has also chosen Russians and islamists rather than the French at the moment. Traveling there will give memories as mud – mosques, painted villages… challenge: sit on the back of the huge and holy crocodiles 🐊
Takeaway: agency and how to visit the lesser risky areas
Libya 🇱🇾 Join us out of Tripoli to the desert 🏜️ where traders gathered in Ghadames that is now a unesco world heritage. Join us as we visit Berber village in the mountains and roam the sand dunes. On a road trip with no gasoline stations in a country with huge oil resources.
Get the beauty too of the deserts, the Nile and even a water fall. And the astonishing people who we met along the way off the beaten path.
